Low-Power Local Radio Rises

This explains a phenomenon I've noticed the last year or so.

There are a couple of new, commercial-free, listener supported stations at the bottom of the FM dial that have popped up in my area.

One is a Jazz station, the other is a kind of "underground" station, sort of like a college station. I live near a bay, which according to the article increases the listening area, important for maximum 100W stations.

Is this as significant as I think it might be, or should I curb my enthusiasm?

It's been happening off and on for decades. The power bill for a transmitter has come down a bunch thanks to class D amplification.
