Do they have a preference?
I usually follow what a band asks, and if they don't seem to care much I go with the way I like (which is drummer perspective  )

I still kinda like Ola's point about being able to air-drum along as a listener.
This time, it's both.

the problem with that thesis is that left handed air drummers would prefer it the other way.
I don't care about that

It's always audience perspective

With most of my favourite records I can put on headphones and see the band performing the song in my mind's eye. I often have trouble doing that with newer records, even when the band can play.

I used to think it didn't matter, so I'd put in in drummer's perspective.

It didn't really matter until 1981. Before that, if you saw a drummer on TV it was in mono.

Then MTV and music videos came along with stereo that you could hook up to your home stereo system. When they do a closeup of the drummer it looks/ feels wrong if it isn't in audience perspective.

I always panned it however the drummer looked from the control womb window!

Audience certainly makes the most sense.

If you MUST pan the drums, audience.
