Re: Fixing Drums

Maybe no-one really cares for an example, in which case move right on, but this drum kit was recorded with a Weedy-style kit front, kit floor tom side, snare top and kick in. IIRC, there were also a couple of room mics out front but it wasn't a very lively room and SM57s were all we had left  ...

Re: Weiss DS1 as a plugin

Tried the demo. The bad part: it sounds really unique. Kinda "happy". It seems to enhance the attacks of the instruments adding movement to the program material. The good part: unusable on my system. When I toggle bypass from the DAW the soundcard driver goes crazy. Doesn't happen all the ...

Weiss DS1 as a plugin

Softube just recently released this. The price is scary, as it probably should be.
I think I will demo, but I don't think I can justify the purchase.

Re: Drum Recording Dissertation - Overheads And Phase Coherency

Weedy, when you receive other people's records to mix, how do you treat OHs? Do you try to EQ in such a way so as to get more of the "kit" from them, if possible? Also, with your setup do you tend to compress the kit as a group? Or would you compress the kit "image" mics separate...

Re: Fixing Drums

As we're talking about drums, I want to mention a plugin which I'm using on kick and snare more often than not lately. It's Boz Transgressor. It is a dynamic processor which senses a transient and then applies different EQ to the attack and sustain portion of the sound. You can also just boost or cu...

Yeah, that was me) I go by different nickname on FB.

I also gave this plugin a try. The Glow/Sheen modes are nice. Though I can come close to this sound by my other EQs. And the price is far too steep for me.

Plugin Alliance 2098

Just got released. Apparently, it is modeled after AMEK 9098 pre/EQ module, not the console. I remember Slipperman commented on how the module version is inferior to console. And not we have a plugin version which is probably inferior to module :stg: Anyway, I need another EQ like a dog needs a fift...

Re: Fixing Drums

Why do you want to trigger the toms? What else is in the arrangement?
If that is supposed to work with high-gain guitars, you're screwed, but if the rest of the arrangement is not too dense, it may well work as it is.

IMO any advice here would be like fixing the car over the phone. Anyway, I found that if things click it's pretty clear from the start. And if it just "kinda" "sorta" works, then it won't get better over time.

Andrew's goal was to speed up his work. I'm sure the settings ranges are for how he uses specific devices as opposed to any kind of universal settings. Yes, I assume as much. For me though, the only point of using it would be to have it as bread and butter plugin on every track. So I would prefer s...

Started demo and at the moment I'm on the fence with it. It is definitely useful, all the modules do what they should. The compressor is cool and modes are very different from each other. What I didn't like is that it does not respond to the attack/release the way I feel it should. E.g. attack has v...

Thoughts? Doing that quite often. Also, there's old (15 years+ probably?) VST called Rednef Twin that just works on DI bass like (only 32bit though). Maybe not the best model of an original amp on the market ATM, but growls and yawls like nothing else. And another thing, I almost ditched using comp...

It really is a case of finding which monitors you get along with...and that can be a frustrating, time-consuming process. I agree. On the other hand, if you really spend a lot of time and listen to a lot of stuff on your setup, you do learn. Takes a while, though (and you have to not HATE your moni...

There is no statistical study and a total of one anecdote Yep. But I do find a lot of the older recordings "imperfect". In a cool and natural way. The question is will younger people who grew up listening to modern productions get so used to the sound of AT and BD, that it would affect th...

Re: Impact of Autotune and Beat detective.

Call me old-fashioned, but BD and AT are tools to be used to fix something that's broken. Like there's a note or beat that's bugging you in an otherwise perfectly good track. I don't see a point in using them on everything as a matter of routine. I agree. If the musicians are tight, there should be...

Impact of Autotune and Beat detective.

OK, so AT and BD were around for twenty years or so. Our ears (or maybe younger people's ears) are used to the quantized/pitch-perfect records. Do you feel it had an impact on those singers and drummers who are ACTUALLY good? Sometimes I feel that young singers who can really sing have this really p...
