What DAW are you using?
Also, some widening plugins do narrowing too. IIRC S1 does this too.

Re: The "best" plugin
So all Waves compressors are selling at $29 this week. Are there any recent ones which stand out? I own C1 and would often use it in split mode, but overall I demoed some of their compressors a while back (CLA collection and SSL) and actually was underwhelmed. They all seemed to have the same kind o...

Re: Beating the rough
Well, yeah, it's not uncommon to me to drop what I've been doing and start from the rough. But more of what I'm talking about is incorporating something which is cool from the rough, but is also "wrong". Sometimes it's easy, e.g. if a part is out of balance in the rough but it makes for a ...

Beating the rough
It is often said that the rough mix is often fresher, more alive, has more impact. And sometimes it's fair to stop trying to beat it and just use the rough. But I found that at times what made the rough cool are things that are "wrong". E.g. additional parts with unusual instruments often ...

Re: Compression on reversed signals
those things seek to internally rebalance a track... they're not compressors per se. Yes, sort of creating automation for each drum hit. That way they avoid "compression" sound. Compressing reversed signals also avoids this sound largely. Does mess with the decay of the drum though, but s...

Re: Compression on reversed signals
I suppose my thinking is along the lines of: if you don't want it to sound compressed, don't compress it. Yes, but sometimes it's just not played and/or recorded properly and automating everything just takes too much time. There are also things like Sound Radix Drum Leveller and Melda MDrummer whic...

Re: Compression on reversed signals
Just so I get this straight, are you saying that you reverse the signal --> apply compression --> reverse the signal back to normal? Yes, exactly. Also, would the 'standard' way of doing this be to keep the same settings that you set for the track playing normally, or would you adjust stuff like th...

Re: Compression on reversed signals
yllis s'ti kniht I .yletinifed tsoM It is certainly not a "vibe" thing and the compression can only be set by meters this way. But it moves the compression artifacts (which are often desirable) to the other parts of the signal, where they are not as apparent. Drums produce waveforms which...

Compression on reversed signals
So there is this trick when you reverse a track and then apply compression on it. Do you ever use it? Seems gimmicky but it seems to provide some taming of the dynamics of the track while preserving the transients better. Although it produces some kind of "swelling" sounds on the backgroun...

Re: Waves PRS ampsims
I have tried PRS and also Bias AMP 2. Indeed, Bias AMP 2 seems more flexible and more realistic as well. Uses much more CPU though. I feel that the "amp" tone is comparable in quality between the two, but the cab emulation is much better on Bias AMP. And Bias AMP 2 is IMO miles ahead of Bi...

I have PSP NobleQ. I think is quite good, but I'm much more into the same approach as Cirrus , so I use pretty much the same EQ everywhere. Also, if you really want the character and can tolerate CPU/memory hit and latency look onto Acoustica Purple P-1. Not everything they do works for me, especial...

I think it’s always a a question of “is his doing what I wanted, and needed, it to do?” And not getting caught up in an endless game of ‘can I beat it, or ‘I wonder what THIS would do’ Indeed. But some people seem to need more choices and some less. And I wonder if there's narrower "operating ...

Bob Olhsson (if I am not mistaken) mentioned that often times he would go through several compressor options for a particular track and that there's no plugin that will "just work" all the times. He also said that it was not a thing with analog gear. Now my memory could play tricks on me, ...

Adele proved that you can still sell records if they are good enough. Currently, there's a band over here which generated a huge following in a little more than a year. Every single choice should be on a musical level. I think our problem today is too many choices based on fashion or hero worship and not enough actual mastery of an instrument. Totally Whatever “fashion” is involved is already built in to the song and production on a musical level. I don't know. I think we are arguing on semantics. For example, a band's choice of a guitar sound -- is it a musical level? This choice is definitely a thing of fashion, i.e. it is totally depe...

All you can do is try to make it sound good and balance AS YOU ARE HEARING IT. I agree. But the general sound is as much a thing of fashion as of taste IMO. It is a thing of education to some degree. And with that, if one has a reasonably "right" sounding monitors and listens to a lot of ...
