Re: Hired guns

what was unclear?

I mean that before I pick up the phone and hire Anton Fig, it's up to ME, as the producer, to KNOW that Anton is capable and the right call for my particular session.

If it turns out that he doesn't work out, that's my risk, not his.
He still gets paid for turning up.

Re: Hired guns

no, it's up to the producer to know about whom he/she is hiring.

if they show up, they get paid for the 3 hr session.

Re: What happened to...

the amazing bit of reframing the right has managed (over 50 years) is to position government that actually seeks to curtail rights as "liberty" while calling government that actually seeks to expand rights to everyone as 'unconstitutional' or 'power grabbing'

Re: What happened to...

The lesson being that bombs, (which despite being “arms” are illegal) are much harder to come by.

If you could walk into Walmart and buy land mines or plastic explosives they’d be used a lot more.

I’m not sure I read the underlying issues the same way as John, but there isn’t any question that the Russian govt. supports the NRA covertly as a means of pumping up the crazy alt right types.
Just to maintain chaos and division.

even as in russia they’d never allow the public to be armed.

Democrats win by making the case that government is often the RIGHT answer.

they lose by agreeing with the republiklans that govt. is the problem.

Re: Waves Vocal Rider

something like that...
if it's the sort of thing where you don't want to hear any compression on a vocal, but the vocal has a lot of movement, or the track has a lot of competing movement in dynamics, you might START with Vocal Rider and then tweak automation after that.

The rich and their corporations are out to screw You.
And government can be the force for good to help you.

It’s a simple message.
And it’s the counter message to the “government is the enemy “ message from the right.

Conor Lamb campaigned:
1. For universal health care
2. Against Trump’s tax cut
3. For expanded background checks
4. For stronger unions
5. Against cuts to Social Security
6. For a woman’s right to choose
7. For medical marijuana

“Conservative Democrat” my ass.

He ran as an FDR Democrat.
And exit polls suggested that Republicans dismantling Obamacare was a big part of what people didn’t like.

Both these things are very encouraging signs.
Even as the right dishonestly tries to spin Lamb as “conservative”
He’s NOT.

A) there is no such thing as “too liberal”

B) the same morons in hats who fantasize that the US military is near invincible elsewhere imagine that they can win a war against F15s and cruise missiles with AR15s.

Re: Thoughts on monitors...

I’m sick to death (and bored to tears) by generic cookie cutter “HAVE TO do it this way” records.
There isn’t any reason why every metal record has to have a particular drum sound or every pop record has to have a certain vocal sound etc.

Someone needs to lead; not follow.

Agreed.

It’s also a myth that Jews were “unarmed”, or disarmed, in Europe leading up to WWII.
THEY WERE NEVER going to be a match for a massively equipped army.
Just as no moron in a cowboy hat is going to be against Navy Seals.

Re: Thoughts on monitors...

Home studio or not, I still think there is a difference between the perfectly reasonable “I know what the snare needs to sound like on these monitors”, and the ultimately unworkable actual FLAW, such as “it needs to sound a little too bright in here because my speakers are bright” Rather than “learn...

Re: Thoughts on monitors...

the other problem with the "learning" the monitors idea is: other people in the room. when the guitar player (or the producer or the A&R weasel) says "that vocal isn't loud enough" or "that snare drum sounds dull", saying "I know, but it will be fine when you t...

Re: Drum Recording Dissertation - Overheads And Phase Coherency

all of those were one version of a simple approach or another. Joan's record has two 4038s out in front of the kit, wide and a bass drum and snare mic. Dave's record has an approach like in the pictures with UM71s in front and on the side and two room mics spread wide. Patty's has the left right kit...

Re: Drum Recording Dissertation - Overheads And Phase Coherency

I almost never (near to actually never) compress drum close mics. I will sometimes compress the room miss, and I will sometimes compress the overall drum sub group. But I am compressing the stereo mix bus and sometimes that's enough. Other people's drums are a question of their intent and how much t...

Re: Drum Recording Dissertation - Overheads And Phase Coherency

I might add that sometimes a way to go is with the high tom side mic assigned to the centre, and the floor tom side assigned left.
that's in some respects a more realistic look and certainly narrower.
it depends on how spread an image you're going for.

Re: Drum Recording Dissertation - Overheads And Phase Coherency

another session.

this one has (a mostly unused) mono overhead and a HiHat mic as well.

and stereo 'room' or front of kit mics.

it's for a country record so a roomy sound is not the goal.

on some song, all I used was the close bass drum and snare and those spread 4038s.
