Re: Stairwell impulses

So, to dumb it down, you either get a degree in engineering or you go to a reverb plugin and click the preset that says "Ratville Community Hospital South Stairwell". There should be a knob that lets you adjust how open the door to the basement is. I like to keep it full open so I can get...

Re: Stairwell impulses

I'm in Europe, so we have tons of churches that remain open and empty most of the time. Anytime I'm in a new town and have a minute to spare, I like to pop into the local church, and if quiet, take an impulse (using pretty much the same method as you, except a few heavy claps instead of stomps). I'v...

Re: When A Band's References Don't Fit...

Time to bring out that old chestnut... Who is producing? I had a similar situation a couple years back, where it was cleared up front that the band leader was producing. I was just the engineer. When it came to mix time, he gave me a nine inch nails track as a mix reference for one of the songs. Nee...

Ahh, that was a fun thread back at the old place. Here's something Ricky Gervais just shared about Australia:

Why not? It would be fun! ;)

He's pretty much gone black (Digital black/Offline/Off the Radar/Disappeared from public view.. Just to be clear for the future public record) for the last year, or so... I wonder what's happened.

Re: Fixing Drums

I'm kind of with meloco_go in asking exactly what you want from this, as aside from the phasey cymbal wash, it's not such a bad capture. It's all dependent on the final "vision" for the song, though, so without context, it's hard to advise any further. And as you didn't track it, it's time...

That 432 malarkey has been pretty comprehensively debunked.

Cheers,

Was it debunked? or was the comprehensive debunking debunked?
I can't keep up.

Re: Fixing Drums

I have all of the above but I'm still a bit skeptical that the above method will work in this case. Here's a clip from the track I'm referring to: https://www.dropbox.com/s/au3kqq1pjio1vl5/Drums%20Bl-2-ASIO%20Lynx%20Lynx%20AES16e%20Play%2001.wav?dl=0 Which drums do you want to supplement, again? Re: Fixing Drums

Maybe you missed this? "And if you don't have adequate spot mics, which is sometimes the case, you need to use the room/ overheads that you have to work with." No, I got that. What does that have to do with sample replacement? You don't need close mics to trigger samples to blend in. Don'...

Weird phenomenonenon

Hey gang, been a while... I just discovered something, maybe it's just me, but wanted to see if there's other weirdos like me out there. I was listening to a song on headphones, and was trying to identify the individual instruments and how they were placed in the mix. Drums were panned hard L&R ...

Re: Fixing Drums

Cool, but I'm talking about mixing, not recording drums. Fortunately, the snare was usable. I have isolated kick tracks to work with but when there is already plenty of kick in the overheads and/ or room mics there's no place to put them. That's when high pass filters and sample replacement are you...

Re: Fundamentals/ golden nuggets

I never use overheads anymore - or close tom mics, either. Since going over to essentially a Weedy Wet 4 mic plus room setup I've found that things are a lot easier and much more natural sounding. I mic the snare from the side about an inch or two offset from the sound hole, half way between top an...

Re: Fundamentals/ golden nuggets

I had a track in which I flipped the phase of one of the stereo overheads or room mics and the whole drum sound got bigger and beefier. Then I checked it in mono and the drums all but disappeared. What the hell happened? :mm2: Polarity, you flipped the polarity... In order to check for phase issues...

Re: Fixing Drums

What, no recordings of the drummer hitting every individual drum and cymbal for post enhancement? Tsk, tsk. Or, are you just referring to turd polishing from bad recording spaces? In that case, I'd get the OH and rooms sounding as good as possible, and then focus on the close mics. Never had a probl...

Re: Bass guitars and poweramps

As Tim pointed out, it's all context dependent, but when I want a lot of grit, I usually get it from a mult of the clean DI through a fast attack, fast release 1176. That fuzzes things up quickly in a way an amp never seems to. That said, I like amps too. It all depends.
