Re: Drum Recording Dissertation - Overheads And Phase Coherency

I always thought it was strange that the Beta 52, when you unscrew the huge metal grill front, just basically looks like a '57 capsule sticking out into air. And the SM7, when you take the foam off and look through the basket... just looks like a '57 capsule sticking out into the air. One of them is...

And, at that point, you sidechain the mixbus comp to the kick track with 0 attack and 1/4 note release, call it dance music and laugh all the way to the bank. :yep:

Re: Drum Recording Dissertation - Overheads And Phase Coherency

this has compression on the sub group: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWbRtpIRuFw this has the room miss compressed, but not the group. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mv1MTT4NofE I know it's not really the point of the thread, but I really love that Dave Hause track, hadn't come across him before...

Re: Adding room ambiance to drum recordings

Point is, what is the difference between re-miking and using an echo chamber that contains a speaker and a mic? Except that an accountant doesn't work in the echo chamber and nobody has to use the stairs. The difference is that I had access to a foyer and not a dedicated echo chamber, mostly.

Re: Adding room ambiance to drum recordings

Just to follow up on this, I spent this afternoon pumping drums out of a PA into the afforementioned foyer. Worked fantastically, way better than I'd have imagined. Leaned heavily on the overheads, as that's what I had that was most like a whole kit, but did sneak the close mics in for some extra fo...

Re: Pultec EQP-1A plugins

I only have one Black Rooster plug, that being the Vpre-73, and I think that's pretty good sounding (particularly the high shelf). Lots of people say nice things about the LA-3a emu, enough that there's probably something in it, but I've never tried it.

Re: Pultec EQP-1A plugins

It gave me a bit of an existential crisis for a while - I imagined the EQ would be ok for utility stuff, but I would still use my discerning ear ( :uhoh: ) to choose between the various pseudomorphic plugs I know and love. But, instead, the EQ was as good as anything else I had (I'm using 32c, I ass...

I know your pain. Luckily, Harrison Mixbus has rendered most of mine obsolete, so now I just worry about the money I wasted.

Re: Pultec EQP-1A plugins

I've got the Nomad Pulsetec and the Waves Puigtec, used them both quite extensively. To my ears, the Puigtec is better - bigger, softer, smoother and I like that. I find it easier to get a nice low end balance of boost and cut, and get some high end sparkle that stays smooth with the high cut contro...

Something I found since I started using Harrison Mixbus is that there's something incredible liberating about having the same built in EQ on every channel. I'm sure a few people here will be thinking "no duh" ... With past DAWs, I'd always have to decide - do I want my favourite digi...

Re: Song I recently shoved out my front door...

Thanks for the comment, which I'd missed! yes, big volume change. It's what felt right to me at the time in terms of creating impact, and since it wasn't mastered by someone else I don't know what they'd have done in terms of dynamics. I sent it to a few friends/ trusted ears first and they didn't r...

Re: Adding room ambiance to drum recordings

Aim the mike(s) away from the speaker(s.) :yep: Shall do! The space I've got my eyes (ears?) on is a two story high big brick-walled foyer where there's a balcony area covering about half the floor area, so I was thinking I'd set up downstairs under the balcony and run the mics up to the 1st floor ...

Adding room ambiance to drum recordings

I'm thinking of pumping some drum recordings I've got out into a brighter, livelier space to create a stereo room track. Those of you who have done this, what have you found works? Do you send all the mics into the room? Just overheads? Just close mics? I've only ever worked with a mono room mic in ...

Re: Drum Recording Dissertation - Overheads And Phase Coherency

not the very best photo, but this sort of shows my general positioning. The microphone over the floor tom gives me a very bright, top heavy kick drum sound compared to the microphone in front of the rack tom and it can be a tiny bit distracting even when the close kick drum microphone is added in. ...

Re: Fixing Drums

Of course that's assuming you're actually micing a kit. I would love to try 4-mic drum setup, however, I wonder how it works in the context of heavily distorted guitars. Maybe no-one really cares for an example, in which case move right on, but this drum kit was recorded with a Weedy-style kit fron...

Re: Thoughts on monitors...

I think it's quite a common internet meme to say that you need to learn monitors, because they're all different. And obviously there's some practical truth to that - you need to know, for example, in your mix environment what "too much bass" actually feels like. But I think it's dangerous ...

Re: Fundamentals/ golden nuggets

It is front of kit. I was stunned the first time I tried it. I later learned that it had been SOP in Muscle Shoals. Yeah, I think one of the strengths of doing it that way (besides the way it *sounds like the drum kit*!) is that you end up with each mic looking past the rack and floor tom respectiv...

Just recently went through the same thing, deciding how to present the audio for Youtube. I think aside from not overcompressing/ limiting, the main thing is making sure that the video format you're uploading isn't limiting the quality of the audio. I hadn't actually realised how much there was to t...

Song I recently shoved out my front door...

For the last ~10 years I've been songwriter and guitarist in a band, dealing with the art while others in the band dealt with the business. Over the last couple of years things have been slowing down on that front, while I continue to pump out new song ideas. I prevaricated for quite a long time ove...

Nice, and yes, the drums sound a little thin but I actually quite like that - leaves lots of space in the low mids for the piano. And a lovely vocal!

Nice song! And I like the production, especially the presence and punch of the guitars. I feel like I'd like to hear more vocals, especially when you're really pushing the instruments from around 2:30.
